Malaria is one of Ghana's/Africa's most urgent health concerns. We tackle this disease by distributing mosquito nets, registering young children and their mothers for insurance and promoting awareness
Malaria is one of Ghana's most urgent public health concerns--the disease is a leading killer of children under 5 and accounts for millions of dollars in lost productivity. Essiam, Cape Coast, where we will be working this winter, is an example of a community crippled by Malaria.
We will tackle this disease by distributing mosquito nets, registering young children and their mothers for Ghana's government-run (yet often unaffordable) health insurance, and partnering with local health officials and schools to promote awareness
Over 1000 people will have increased protection against, and awareness of, Malaria. Also the community's children under 5 will have access to health insurance, ensuring that parents now seek medical treatment for their young children.
Ahoto's project is among the more innovative and well-run projects I have observed. The fact that this initiative is run by a group of highly motivated college students makes this remarkable.
