Summary
The Columbia River Gorge is a spectacular treasure. Make a gift to protect its natural wonders for future generations. Each new dollar given by Dec 31, 2010 is matched by an anonymous donor.
What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
The Columbia River Gorge is one of the world's most spectacular landscapes, but a landscape threatened with large-scale development proposals, air pollution and overuse. Friends works to strike a balance: protecting the scenic and natural values while encouraging sustainable recreation. Long-term Gorge protection can only come through strong public support. Friends of the Columbia Gorge must build a committed group of supporters to preserve the Gorge for future generations.
How will this project solve this problem?
Friend is launching "Step Up for the Gorge," a call to action to support Gorge protection. An anonymous donor has offered up to $50,000 in matching donations to challenge individuals to increase their giving to Friends of the Columbia Gorge.
Potential Long Term Impact
Over three million visit the Gorge each year. This campaign will strengthen Gorge protection and ensure that it remains a special place for everyone, now and in the future. It will also benefit Gorge communities by protecting tourist destinations.
Project Message
Few people who casually hike and recreate in the Gorge know the behind-the-scenes work that Friends [does] ... they rarely get lauded for their less-known achievements of public success.
