The APCH Shaheen Scholarship component is an in-house program designed to assist members in overcoming the multiple hardships they face when preparing for, applying to, and matriculating in college. As such, it is a comprehensive resource that recognizes that college students' needs are not simply financial. Now staffed by an on-site College Guidance Counselor, the program was launched in 2002 through the generous support of the David and Linda Shaheen Foundation.
A Place Called Home is located in one of the most challenged communities in the nation: poverty, unemployment, gang violence, drugs, and unstable households present unrelenting adversity for the youth and community members. Local parents have extremely limited education, not only compromising their ability to seek and retain livable wages, but also their ability to provide appropriate academic support to their children.
South Central youth need positive alternatives if they are to ascend from the bottom of the socio-economic ladder, and they clearly cannot rely solely on schools and other traditional resources to assist them. And their families, whether impoverished or not, must be empowered to deal effectively with adverse circumstances. Education enrichment programs and services provided by A Place Called Home provides these positive alternatives.
The APCH Shaheen Scholarship sends 60 APCH members to colleges (in state and out of state) with financial assistance as well as college preparation and survival skills.
