St. Vincent's Center for Handicapped Children in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, lost its clinic, school, and dormitory during the catastrophic earthquake in 2010. Over 200 disabled children receive daily food, education and medical care at the facility. Our team is committed to providing an uninterrupted supply of food and water so these children can optimize their learning potential and become self-sufficient, productive members of society, breaking the social stigma of handicapped people in Haiti.
St. Vincent's Center for Handicapped Children provides medical care and education for 200 students with disabilities as well as a year-round home for 90 children. St. Vincent's lost everything in the January 2010 earthquake: their school, clinic, surgical center and dormitory. The Center's ongoing needs are for clean water, sufficient food, medical care and educational supplies for children whose maladies include blindness, deafness and various physical handicaps.
The Red Thread Promise will work side-by-side with St. Vincent's director to meet the Center's most pressing needs for the children, including:
- ensuring a safe, consistent supply of food & water
- furnishing the Center's temporary clinic & pharmacy and filling the shelves with supplies
- providing educational materials for the school, including specialized items for the blind and deaf
- bringing medical teams to the Center to treat the students, employees, neighbors & their families.
St. Vincent's is an established local resource for many people with disabilities. Its continued operation allows it to consistently serve the community which holds a very negative opinion of people with handicaps.
By meeting the goals outlined above, the children will be in a better state of health and receive a solid education. In addition, as they become productive members of society, this project has the potential to change the social stigma associated with disabled people in Haiti.
"I love The Red Thread Promise. They ask what we need and listen to our responses, never bringing things we haven't requested. While most organizations send used things, TRTP sends all NEW supplies!" - Father Sadoni Leon, Director, St. Vincent's Center for Handicapped Children
