This project supports 300 children with disabilities age 5-18 to participate in the Northern Uganda Children's Marathon event to make them access and take part in sports and games which is seriously lacking. ACU proposes to build on the premise of sport for peace to bring able-bodied and children with disabilities together to promote and take part in sports, games, events and through doing so jointly contributes positively to rebuilding northern Uganda in a peaceful and non violence means.
Young people with disabilities in Northern Uganda face great deal of stigma, neglect and abuse, particularly as children which can lead them being confined and denied opportunities to play and interact with others. In Northern Uganda where communities are struggling to recovery from the 20 years of conflict, there are poor facilities and equipment and other factors including lack of train coaches or teachers with skills to support children and young people with disabilities to play sports.
The project will support children and young people with disabilities in Northern Uganda to actively engage with their peers and each other by taking part in sporting and recreational activities. provision of appropriate sporting facilities and equipments for children and youth with disabilities. Children with disabilities participate in the northern Uganda children's Marathon in December. Train mentors and peers support with skills in sports with children with disabilities
Children and young people with disabilities in Northern Uganda realize their rights to play and engage in recreational activities. Community understand the importance of play in child growth and development. promotes equal opportunity and non discrimination for boys, girls and disable children in sporting activities. Active children shall enjoy additional health benefits.
