Let her shine! You can bring light to a girl's life - literally! Help Solar Sister reach out to girls in Uganda who live without access to electricity and provide them with access to safe, clean solar light. This project helps girls in rural Uganda form micro-enterprise clubs. The girls sell solar lights to their communities to earn money for school fees, and learn about technology and business opportunities in a hands-on program that brings light, hope and opportunity to girls.
Imagine: You are a young girl living in a rural village in Africa. You dream of doing well on your exams so that you can continue your studies at a well regarded secondary school. But, by the time you have finished your chores, it is dark. You try to study by the light of a kerosene lamp, but the smoke burns your eyes and makes you cough. You fall behind in school, and then drop out. Over 300 million women & girls in sub-Saharan Africa don't have to imagine this scenario, this is their reality.
Solar Sister employs deliberate strategies that connect learning with real-life experiences that incorporate technology and business skills. By providing Solar Sister girls with life skills and business smarts, we empower them to spread the use of affordable solar products and support the work of their community groups. And, by harnessing the power of the Girl Effect in our programs, we let girls shine their own unique light on the world.
In rural Africa, the technology gender-gap is wide and has devastating consequences as girls miss out on education and opportunity because they do not have access to simple technological solutions to their everyday burdens. Without adequate light, girls miss out on study time, as they normally attend to domestic chores after school. Giving girls the ability to be solar entrepreneurs empowers them to be leaders and change makers in their communities, giving them a bright future.
"This is about helping women and girls start their own enterprises and learn skills that no one can take away from them." - Sarah Kasule, Director of Mother's Union/Solar Sister partner
