TanzSolar meeting with villagers.
TanzSolar meeting with villagers.

TanzSolar’s Global Giving project, Affordable Solar Light for 12500 African Villagers, continues to subsidize the cost of solar lights for rural Tanzanian families.  We have just $3,520 left to complete this project, only 6%!

Your donations have paid for half of the cost of a solar-powered light for a village family.  The villagers themselves pay for the other half, which encourages them to value and care for these lights.  TanzSolar is headquartered in Musoma, a town in Northern Tanzania conveniently located to thousands of rural households.  We offer ongoing product support, battery replacements and equipment repairs at or below cost.  We produce educational literature and are working to introduce the populace to solar electricity and efficient electric lighting.  Together we are bringing knowledge and light to rural Africa.

In addition you might like to take a look at our school project; www.globalgiving.org/projects/solar-schools4africa/.  This project will fund the electrification of a rural secondary school in northern Tanzania.

Again we thank you for your generous support.  Your donations have changed the lives of this large, hard-working rural population in Tanzania, and they are deeply appreciated.

January 2012 Update

TanzSolar field team with a happy client
TanzSolar field team with a happy client

TanzSolar’s first Global Giving project, Affordable Solar Light for 12500 African Villagers, is 94% funded.  The money you have donated has changed the lives of over 11,500 villagers.  These families now have electric light.

Over the holidays I could not help but be especially struck by the contrast between our lives in the US and the lives of rural Tanzanians.  I love holiday lights and shopping for gifts for my family, don’t get me wrong.  And yet I remember that in Tanzania they may have a church service, but there’s no holiday event at home because they don’t have money to spend or places to shop.  Certainly no colored lights!  But they do have close family ties and a strong community.  They have farms and good food.  And now, thanks to you, many of them have clean, electric lighting.

Please help us finish this project and continue to support this ongoing work through our website; TanzSolar.org.  In addition, we have a second project on Global Giving; Solar Electricity for an African School.  Please take a look at that project.  It’s a much smaller project, with a $12,000 total budget.  We are raising money to complete our first rural secondary school electrification.  None of the Secondary Schools in our region have electricity.  We plan that this is the first of many, so it is especially important to us.

All of us at TanzSolar and the people of the Lake Zone in Tanzania thank you for your support.  Collectively your donations have made a significant difference to a large, hard-working rural population, and it is greatly appreciated.

We would like to offer a special thanks to our organizational supporters; Neutrogena Corporation, Finlandia, Café Press, Africa Solar Fund, Connect to Change, Rural Energy Agency of Tanzania, Fundacion Colegio Americano De Puebla, The Dwelle Family Foundation, Marin/SF Jewish Community Teen Foundation, SIGG USA, Weller Investment Company, Argent & Schuster Inc, and Lucapost.

TanzSolar Project Update Q4 2011

Roadside charcoal sales
Roadside charcoal sales

Thanks to your ongoing support, TanzSolar has distributed over 1500 solar lights so far this year, bringing us to over 7,000 systems to date.  We continue to bring the lights to villagers in the Northern, Lake Zone region of Tanzania.  There are still approximately 1.5 Million households with no electricity in the Lake Zone, so our work is far from over!

The Neutrogena contest is finished, and thanks to all of you who voted for TanzSolar.  We were honored to be selected and it was a close race.  Even though we did not win we are happy to announce that Neutrogena will be making an $8,000 donation to our project, which we will make good use of in subsidizing over 300 additional lighting systems.

TanzSolar is also appreciative of the support of the Tanzanian Rural Energy Agency.  Our first grant from the REA was used to help TanzSolar reach hundreds of villagers, to print marketing materials, make our booth for the village markets, and to develop and print our first 2 solar energy comic books.  You can see these on our website, although they are in Kiswahili, so you might not appreciate all the text!  We hope to enjoy continued support from this agency, who's charter is to get electricity to millions of rural Tanzanians who currently do not have access.  TanzSolar can get these villagers electricity much more quickly and at much lower cost than the under-supplied National power grid.

Please mark your calendars!  Global Giving is having one more bonus day this year.  On October 19, GlobalGiving is matching at 30% all online donations up to $1,000 per donor per project!  We have only 18,559 left to raise on this project; less than 1/3 of our total goal.  Please help us reach this goal with your end-of-year giving.  You are part of movement that is drastically improving lives as well as the global environment.  Every bit helps.

Thank you from Tanzania!

March 2011 update TanzSolar_Rural Africa Lighting

Showing villagers the Solar Light 1
Showing villagers the Solar Light 1

TanzSolar is very pleased to announce that we have passed the “5000” solar light milestone!

In the forth quarter 2010 TanzSolar continued with our scheduled trips to the village markets.  We set up our booth at the monthly markets with loud speakers and 3 staff members.  In this quarter we exhibited at the markets in the villages of; Bitaraguru, Isenye, Kiabakari, Kiagata, Kirumi, Kisaka , Majimoto, Masinki, Mugeta, Mugumu, Mwibagi and Saragana.

Most of our time is spent explaining the solar electric lights and solar panels.  Customer satisfaction with the product is high and we often get repeat customers, wanting a second or third light.  We do encounter customers who have a battery failure or other problem from time to time, and we repair or replace their lights.

Thanks to your donations,TanzSolar distributed 785 solar lights in Q4 2010!

We have been fortunate to enjoy financial support from the Rural Energy Agency for TanzSolar’s marketing efforts in the Mara Region.  We have produced a booklet in Kiswahili about solar power in comic book format.  We will begin distributing these in the villages as well.

Thank you for your ongoing support for clean affordable light in rural Tanzania!

Did you know that March 16 is Bonus Day – where Global Giving will supplement donations by an additional 30%.  (Matching is applied at 30% up to $1,000 per donor per project.)  If you can afford to make a donation it will help us greatly!
