Solar Energy training for 50 university students

Summary

Solar electricity and solar hot water courses will be taught as elective courses to students of Government Technical Institute - Sierra Leone.

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

Government Technical Institute-Kissy typically serves the least economically advantaged students in Sierra Leone and struggles to fund and attract specialised courses. This programme will target 50 students in the first year and increase this to 125 per year starting in the second year.

How will this project solve this problem?

Solar electricity and hot water classes will begin in April 2009 and be fully integrated into the cirriculum for the 2009-2010 school year. Courses will be taught by locally available experts and faculty will be trained to continue the programme.

Potential Long Term Impact

Sierra Leone has an estimated youth unemployment rate of between 60-70% with formal sector employment as low as 9%. Providing high level training, through the existing education system can allow for employment in this emerging sector.
