Amidst the harsh poverty of Kisumu, Kenya, this KYFA project provides 3,000 rural and slum-dwelling boys and girls with safe places to play soccer, opportunities to engage in peer education training, and motivation to excel in school.
A majority of the children who play in KYFA's football (soccer) leagues come from rural areas or slums of Kisumu, where families typically live on less than $1 a day. KYFA is one of the few organizations in Kisumu offering children organized sports competitions on a regular basis. By engaging in adult-supervised soccer trainings, league matches, and leadership workshops, the 3,000 girls and boys of KYFA are given opportunities to grow physically, emotionally and academically.
KYFA currently provides: -17 leagues for boys and girls age 8-18 -Recognition program for players who excel in school -Training courses for 130 team captains on 'informed decision-making' to develop their leadership and peer education skills -Technical training for coaches, referees, and first aiders -Special programs for disadvantaged girls, including monthly sanitary pad donations to 350 female players
The most popular sport in Africa, football keeps kids out of trouble and gives them essential time to play outside of school. KYFA has seen the remarkable power of football to rehabilitate street-boys, motivate girls to stay in school and pursue their education, and keep kids away from negative influences such as drugs and alcohol. This project will give 3,000 disadvantaged children the opportunity to transcend poverty through a commitment to soccer, education and leadership.
"We've discovered that the street-boys who play on the KYFA football team are rehabilitated much faster than others because football teaches them about boundaries and teamwork."
- Seth Oduor, KYFA-trained coach, Soccer Stars FC
