Summary

Cholera, Dysentery, and Typhoid fever are deadly waterborne diseases that kill 14,000 children in the D.R. Congo each year. With your help, we can supply lifesaving rehydrating liquids for sick children, teach hand washing and basic hygiene to parents and children in schools, distribute soap, provide chlorine tablets to purify water, and procure permanent water purification devices for 5,000 people in 7 villages in the South-Kivu province of the D.R. Congo.

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

Waterborne illnesses such as Dysentery, Typhoid fever, and Cholera kill 1 out of 6 children every year. In 2011 alone, there have been 18,000 cases of cholera, and over 70% of victims were children. Cholera spreads from drinking contaminated water, can kill within hours, and causes severe dehydration, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. Lack of awareness about basic hand washing and hygiene, extremely difficult access to clean water, and the cost of soap contribute to these devastating deaths.

How will this project solve this problem?

(1)Help treat 300 sick children by providing lifesaving rehydrating salts to parents, 7 local dispensaries and clinics.(2)Teach hand washing and hygiene to 600 parents and 1,500 children in 10 primary schools;(3) Distribute 1,000 bars of soap and 700 chlorine tablets for water purification.(4)Provide 3 water purification devices for 5,000 villagers for long-term access to clean water, and (5)Conduct a behavior change campaign through radio ads and weekly information sessions in the 7 villages.

Potential Long Term Impact

Beyond the immediate effect of saving lives with the rehydrating liquids and the hygiene supplies, over 5,000 villagers will acquire the lifesaving knowledge necessary to eradicate cholera, typhoid fever, and dysentery from their daily lives. Ultimately, educating parents and children on how to prevent waterborne diseases will benefit current and future rural communities in the South-Kivu province of the D.R. Congo.
