Building social enterprises to provide sources of sustainable income for the local residents and environmental initiatives of Mexico's Sierra Gorda Reserve.
The Sierra Gorda is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in the mountains of central Mexico. Despite its protected status, the reserve must maintain a delicate balance between its fragile ecosystem and the survival needs its 100,000 residents, 75 percent of whom live on less than $7 per day. GESG is implementing action programs together with local communities to increase its sustainability through self-financing and expand the coverage of its programs for the benefit of the Reserve and local communities.
GESG is assisting local communities to set up production facilities and market the products in locations of interest to tourists.
The project goal is to generate alternative income sources for residents of the Sierra Gorda Reserve as well as sustained support for GESG’s environmental activities.
