Shining Hope for Communities October News

You are supporting our students & their families!
You are supporting our students & their families!

On October 11th, the Kibera School for Girls and the Kibera community joined together to recognize and celebrate the rights and value of girls for the very first International Day of the Girl Child. View photos from the celebration!

We are proud to have your support in our movement for change! While we are closing this particular project page in order to consolidate our presence on Globalgiving, we encourage you to migrate your support to Shining Hope for Communities' Girl Effect Project Page. The Challenge starts on November 1st (next week!) and we need you to rally the highest number of grassroots supporters to help us win $25k to grow our impact! Tell your friends & family to support the Girl Effect in Kibera by making any level of contribution on our Girl Effect Project Page. Every donation counts!

This Fall, our work empowering girls & their familes is featured by Half the Sky Movement, a campaign inspired by Nicholas Kristof & Sheryl WuDunn. Nicholas Kristof and Half the Sky Celebrity Advocate Olivia Wilde make a visit to SHOFCO! WATCH the FILM >>

We're proud to share with you the poem below from Vanessa, a 2nd grade student at the Kibera School for Girls:

I Am Me”

I am Vanessa
I am as brave as a lion
I work hard to achieve my dream of becoming a doctor
I am a flower
I make your garden full with beautiful colors
I am the happiest girl in The Kibera School for Girls
Whatever I am, I am always happy because I know
Even if I am by myself
There is somebody who cares for me and loves me
I am beautiful
I love how I was created
I am the Grumpy Bear
I always know your feelings
I make your dreams come true
I am brave because I look forward to my education success
I am enormous because everyone in The Kibera School for Girls knows me
And even there are some people around the area who know me
I am a little angel
I fly to help other people survive
I am the wind
I give you fresh air
I am the sun
I make your crops grow
I am special
I work hard for my teachers and parents
I am as brown as the sun
I am shining
I am a human being
I am the playful girl in The Kibera School for Girls
I am graceful, hopeful, and lovely
I am the most brilliant girl in the whole wide world
