Shashamane Haiti 2012-2013

Shashamane Sunrise remains committed to assisting in the development of Haiti. We want to ensure that the students, in the schools we have selected to work in, have the necessary resources to foster improvements in their education.

In the last week of June 2012, a team from Shashamane Haiti including executive officers, board members, volunteers and ambassadors will visit Haiti as part of our service visit and site visit. The main goals of the visit are to assess the logistics of a larger service visit possibly including the Yale Alumni Association and a Dental & Medical Mission in 2013, as well as finding suitable local partners to help with construction of the six-classroom block at the Marion School in Corail, Grand Anse. Shashamane will also be conducting a Needs Assessment at two potential schools in (Aux) Les Cayes in southern Haiti. We will also commence planning for our signature fundraiser, the Shash Global Concert Series in 2013, meeting with show promoters and potential performers.

Following a very productive meeting with Joao Alexio of Yale Alumni Association Service Tours, YAA identified three key concerns that Shashamane must address to facilitate the partnership for the service visit in Haiti in 2013. They are:

Security: Shashamane is working with Shashamane Jamaica Chair and security expert Lt Damian Small to
evaluate the security concerns with the planned Haiti trip in 2013. We also expect to get support from the government security personnel

Public Health: Shashamane USA Board Member Dr Tiphani Burrell, a public health professional, is tasked with evaluating the public health concerns that would be important for our Haiti visit.

Logistics:  Accommodation, transportation, telecommunications, food and other partners are being sought to help with the logistics of the tour.

Yale Service Trips build on the diverse talents and energies of our alumni volunteers to provide critical services to communities in need. Projects vary from construction to medicine, education, athletics, small business consulting, and more. These programs provide opportunities to work alongside people in the local community, enjoy meaningful cross-cultural exchange, and form incredible bonds with fellow alumni who share a passion for service.

Shashamane co-founder, Dr Rene Williamson, GRD ’05, Dr Tiphani Burrell PH, Shashamane USA Chair Dr Weslynne Ashton, GRD ’08, Shashamane Program Services Chair Prof Josh Guild GRD ‘07 and Shashamane Haiti Co-Chairs, Dr James Beaty, GRD ’04 and Dr Emmanuelle Clerisme, MED ‘04 are all Yale alums.

Shashamane Haiti has also engaged the Clinton Foundation to assist with logistical help in our planning for Shashamane Service Visit in 2013. In particular we seek logistics helps for our rural electrification project being led by ShashUK Vice-Chair, Philipp Blechinger. The Marion PS currently does not have electricity from the grid. Shashamane is investigating the installation of a Solar Energy alternative at the school.

As part of a planned strategic expansion in the support we give to Haiti the Shashamane Sunrise team will also use the visit to evaluate two potential sponsored schools in Aux( Les) Cayes. Our hope is to identify a Shashamane Sponsored school in the southern part of the island.

The Shashamane Haiti Service Visit in 2013 will also include a Medical and Dental Mission to the Caribbean island, where we will conduct dental and medical workshops for the school and community.

In July/August, we will be developing a two year plan for the school, and in September, we will conduct an assessment of its human, financial and material needs.
