Tumaini Miles of Smiles Centre is located in Western part of Kenya caring for orphaned, abandoned and poor children. Tumaini runs a children's home housing 59 children from ages 0-16 and 10 have joined high school. TMSC runs a school with 267 pupils most of them come from poor families and others live with their guardians. We provide quality education and the basic needs for these children and enabling them to have lead normal lives like other children.
What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
The community we are working with is in rural areas illiteracy is very high. This has contributed to poverty and ignorance in the community. Most children are affected as many dont have opportunity to join school. We have many orphaned children due to HIV/AIDS and due to poverty and lack of exposure these children end up in child labour, prostitution etc. It is in this regard that TMSC is working in this community to give education and accommodate the most affected children.
How will this project solve this problem?
This project is ongoing and will enable us to give the children in our care a good home and environment just like other children. This will boost their esteem and their schooling as they will see no difference with the other children. These children will change the community in the near future after there education and the project is educating the community hence bringing exposure especially in the education field.
Potential Long Term Impact
The project is changing the community as they are now realising the importance of education. We will have many children especially from poor families and the orphaned with good quality education with skills which will enable them have good jobs. Illiteracy, ignorance, poverty will be reduced and because of education even the rapid spread of HIV/AIDS will reduce. Will also have planned families as many are educated on the same.
