We made it!

Education isn't free.   There are a lot of people who aren't able to afford to send their kids to school.  The average cost of schooling for a year is just under 100% of the average wages.    That means that many of the children in Haiti aren't able to attend school.

Thanks to the generosity of many, both on here and elsewhere, we were able to provide an education for over 200 kids in Haiti for the 2013-2014 school year!   The families of these children thank you for your generosity and your willingness to help them provide a future for their children.

School in Haiti runs from October to June (rather than the typical American schedule).   When the kids aren't in school, they do a lot of what typical school children do the world over.    They play with their friends - but they also have to do a lot more work to help around the house.    And they have to use their imaginations much more vividly to play because they don't have the toys and balls and bikes that 1st World kids have.

After the school year is complete, we will be getting report cards to evaluate the students progress and make sure they qualify for next year.    Then we'll determine who qualifies and how many kids we need to help for the 2014-2015 school year.

On behalf of the kids,

Tom

The 2013-2014 School Year is Well Under Way

Education in Haiti is crucial for the long term success of the country.   With illiteracy at well over 50% and with fewer than 15% of all children graduating from high school, education is the future.

But education is also very expensive.   It is routine for the cost of sending one child to school to be as much as one adult can make in a year.   Can you imagine spending $45,000 to send one of your children to school?

And then telling the other three kids, "I'm sorry, you can't go to school, I can't afford to send you."

We don't want to have that happen.

And thanks to you, that hasn't.

For the 2013-2014 school year, we have raised the funds to send 325 children to school!   That's way beyond the 200 that we had asked you for.

Thank you for being a part of the future of Haiti.    It is planting seeds that will make a difference for a life time.

We hope to begin looking forward to the 2014-2015 school year some time this spring.

Thank you for your help in making this happen!
