Summary

BUILD Launch Camp is an intensive 3-day camp where 10th graders acquire the tools and skills needed to start their own businesses, plus leadership, teambuilding and conflict resolution skills.

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

Launch Camp is an essential part of BUILD’s 4-year program, helping students transition from in-class learners to business owners. Students emerge from camp prepared to run their businesses, having drafted business plans and outlined a timeline for implementation with specific tasks to be completed and hurdles to be overcome. Since BUILD target students are the typically the least-prepared to enter college, Launch Campers also learn critical academic skills, to ensure their college eligibility.

How will this project solve this problem?

Launch Camp activities include a review of basic business concepts, professional speaking workshops, team building ropes course, and a speaker series featuring local business leaders. Afterwards students are ready to start their own businesses.

Potential Long Term Impact

Students come to us more interested in business than school. By showing them the connection between hard work and business success, they become interested in school. Rather than just getting through, they excel; they become interested in college.

Project Message

The most important thing that BUILD has taught me is that I have entrepreneurial qualities and now I know I can succeed in whatever I decide to do.
- Winton Anderson, BUILD graduate
