Nourish is partnering with African Sky Inc. to resell organic, fair-wage cotton scrubs in a unique venture that combines for-profit returns with social impact.
Scrubs are being produced with cotton from local farmers, allowing them to sell a refined product for higher returns than the raw material. Scrubs are being produced by local tailors from at-risk populations (oprhans, urban poor women, the handicapped) being paid at minimum 1.5X the local rate for a t-shirt. Scrubs are being sold by college students who invest the profits in similar sustainable development projects.
$5000 is needed to provide for the start-up costs of purchasing the initial batch of scrubs (materials, labor, shipping to the US). Revenue from the first batch will be $6300, enough to pay for a second batch and invest $1300 in similar projects.
Each batch of scrubs that is resold provides 30 days of work for Mali Tailors, $4,410 investment in Mali farmers and $1300 in profit for reinvestment in similar projects. It is development that begets development.
