253 women screened for cervical and breast cancer in Bhaktapur!
A warm thank you to all of the supporters of the NNCTR GlobalGiving project in Nepal! With your wonderful help we have now raised $7576 since we started the campaign, and are just $2424 from our target to be able to screen 1000 women for cervical and breast cancer in Nepal!
To update you on our most recent GlobalGiving camp, we have just completed a very successful cancer screening program in the ancient city of Bhaktapur, Nepal. The screening camp was held on the grounds of the Bramhacharini L.S. School in Kamalbinayak, Bhaktapur, on the 16th of September 2011.
Under the banner of GlobalGiving, 253 women attended the screening camp. We identified 20 women that were positive for potential pre-cancerous lesions of the cervix, and ensured that they receive further diagnostic testing for confirmation and removal of these lesions. This will result in a significant reduction in their risk of cervical cancer in the future, and an increased awareness of their susceptibility to this disease.
11 women were suffering from uterine prolapse of different degrees and were provided with primary treatment and referral, this painful affliction affects an enormous number of women in Nepal as they undertake heavy labour very soon after giving birth. We also provided 84 women free medication to treat cervical infection, and we referred 9 women to our breast cancer specialist for further investigation.
This is what one of our beneficiaries, Ms Ganga Awal (37yo) had to say about the cancer screening camp:
‘I am very happy and thankful to NNCTR, providing the special cervical and breast screening camp in our community. The program was very effective to aware about the cancer as well provide free medicine and medical assistance. So I wish to have such kind of camp in future.’
The team thank you for your continued support! We hope we can raise the remaining money before Christmas to give the much needed gift of women’s healthcare to the women of Nepal!
