Summary

Many children with mental handicaps never attend school. Recent legislation now mandates inclusive education in normal schools. We help children avail this opportunity by preparing them for admission.

Challenge

Many children who should be in regular schools have been denied admission if mildly or moderately mentally handicapped. Uneducated parents make girls stay home to tend younger siblings and boys are made to work for added income. Consequently there is nonacceptance by peer group, community stigmatization, and denial of rights and opportunities that could have led to a better life. Out of the 57 children in our special-education unit, 20 children will be placed in mainstream schools.

Solution

Identify children with mental handicaps of primary-school age, and establish a resource facility in our center to prepare them for admission into regular schools. Train staff at our center and the mainstream schools in project implementation.

Long-Term Impact

Increasing the number of children with mental handicaps who will have access to education in mainstream schools. Creating an inclusive environment in schools and in community. Ensuring the rights of the disabled and creating an accepting society.
