Summary

This project provides 250 children with the tools to plant and grow fresh produce in a school yard garden, which will be distributed by Martha's Table to over 2600 children, families, and individuals.

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

This project addresses issues of hunger, poverty, and nutrition among at-risk children, youth and families in Washington, DC. The children in our daycare, summer and after-school programs will learn how to plant and maintain a garden and acquire the knowledge and the ability to feed themselves and others. Lindsey Buss, the President of Martha's Table says, "This garden creates a hands-on way for our children to learn about food, nutrition, health, science, the environment, and the community."

How will this project solve this problem?

Their cultivation educates them about nutrition as they gain a healthier relationship with food. Demetri Recachinas, Martha's Table's Food Program Manager says, "Most of our kids do not know that potatoes grow in the ground.

Potential Long Term Impact

This project will serve over 2600 people and educate 250 low-income youth about health and nutrition. We hope to help break the cycle of hunger and poverty and allow the children to have a healthier connection with food.

Project Message

The idea of a schoolyard garden is the dream that food can educate children-and better their lives through it-thus shaping the future and the world we live in.
- Demetri Recachinas, Food Program Manager
