Youth education - Goma - Eastern DR Congo

Children in vocational training in fixing hair
Children in vocational training in fixing hair

Progress of our project:

Several assessments conducted in the eastern of Democratic Republic of Congo, have revealed that life has continued to be especially difficult for the displaced children, separated children and to a higher extent those who have lost their parents during the war or during forced population movement. Many children have been soldiers and have not any support to prepare their skills for a better future.

This project facilitates the war orphaned children and former child soldiers in Goma to improve their wellbeing, to access social services such as medical, legal and psycho social support. It provides vocational trainings on sewing, carpentry, welding, motor mechanics, building, cookery and computer literacy. Upon graduation, beneficiaries get a start-up capital so as to enable them to run Small Scale Enterprises in their communities.

 - Story of beneficiaries:

Sadiki is one of ex child soldiers in vocational training at Bujovu children’s Voice center. He is 16 years old. He has finished the training in “cutting and fixing hair:

“ After my training at Children’s Voice center, I got some material. Now I work in my own workshop. I am running my own business. We are five in this Saloon 2 boys and one 2 girls and myself. We are happy to be busy and get economic support from yourself. We can not go anymore in the bush to Mai Mai.”

 - Accomplishments:

A new school program started in September with 200 other children: 115 girls and 85 boys in sewing and fixing hair.

- Impact:

Every year, this project improves community resilience, wellbeing and dignity of vulnerable war orphaned and former child soldiers.

 - Upcoming or past events

Many children are living on the street because of the political, economic and social problems. They are abused and neglected and have little or no literacy skills, now they will have education and protection from street violence.  Militias recruit many of them.
