We will help children in public primary schools to stay healthy by giving them better access to clean water, hand-washing stations, and gender-segregated bathroom facilities, and teaching them good hygiene habits that will last a lifetime.
What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
Lack of safe drinking water and sanitation facilities contribute to disease and poverty in the Western Guatemala Highlands. Sadly, sanitary conditions in many schools in this region are appalling; students never learn good hygiene habits and disease spreads unchecked through the children. Girls drop out of school as they have no segregated bathrooms to access during menstruation.
How will this project solve this problem?
Pueblo a Pueblo will work with the schools to install H2O storage tanks to provide children with safe drinking water; construct child-friendly, gender-segregated bathroom facilities; and help children in target schools to develop new hygiene habits.
Potential Long Term Impact
Hundreds of school children will have safe water to drink, sanitary bathroom facilities, and guidance in healthy hygiene practices. This will reduce the spread of disease and increase good health and hygiene habits throughout the community.
