More Information About this Project

Project Needs and Beneficiaries

PCI-Media Impact, with Red Desarrollo Sostenible, is developing Honduras’ first environmentally-themed radio campaign, "Agua de Angel." Now, as political turmoil grips Honduras, the government radio that was broadcasting "Agua de Angel" is no longer doing so. The show is off the air, and our team in Honduras does not have the means to pay a commercial broadcaster to air the remaining episodes.

Activities

The campaign includes a radio soap opera, interviews with community members, and a variety of educational events. The production team needs additional funding to revive their environmental campaign and get back on the air.

Funding Information

Total Funding Received to Date: $5,265

Why this Project is Important

Potential Long Term Impact

To reduce the prevalence of water-related diseases, which are the leading cause of death in children under the age of five. Our campaign raises awareness about these issues and the need to protect local water sources from depletion and contamination.

Project Message

“I always admired the power of radio soap operas. Now my voice is part of one—that's incredible!”
- Don Jose Dolores, a 70-year-old actor on "Agua de Angel"

Latest Update from the Field

Double your IMPACT

By Danforth Preston - Director of Development, November 20, 2009 12:10 PM

In September, with the support of GlobalGiving donors like you, Media Impact was able to raise the funds to return Honduras’ first environmental-themed radio drama, “Agua de Ángel,” to air after being halted by the June military coup.

Valle de Angeles, the location of “Agua de Ángel’s” broadcast, became a prime target throughout Honduras’ political crisis due to its close proximity to Tegucigalpa, hometown of the ousted President. For the past five months, residents of Valle de Angeles have been subjected to physical attacks as well as the removal of their civil liberties and media freedoms. As a result, the “Agua de Ángel” production team was forced to turn their focus towards personal safety and not techniques to successfully launch an environmental campaign.

Now, as Honduras prepares to re-build and elect its future leader, Media Impact is re-affirming its support of grassroots leaders working to promote the conservation of natural resources and protection of human rights. As such, we are continuing our commitment to our broadcast partner, Red de Desarrollo Sostenible, and the people of Valle de Angeles by re-launching “Agua de Ángel.”

Too much time has passed since the initial airing of “Agua de Ángel,” and Media Impact must provide Red de Desarrollo Sostenible and community volunteers with new technical training. The state of the country has changed significantly since the show last aired, and community members must be aided in direct capacity building, development of new outreach strategies to regain attention from the audiences, and writing of new scripts to make certain that they address Honduras’ current issues.

“Water conservation is important for the future of Honduras, and we want to ensure that ‘Agua de Angel” encourages community members to take action towards promoting clean water,” says Enriqueta Valdez Curiel, Media Impact’s Programs and Evaluation Officer in Latin America.

Please make a donation today to provide local men, women and youth from Valle de Angeles with the necessary training to broadcast a successful environmental campaign. Any donation made before November 30 will be matched by GlobalGiving. Now is your chance to double your IMPACT.

“Honduras te lo agradecerá (Honduras will thank you),” says Victor Hugo Avila, program coordinator for Red de Desarrollo Sostenible.
