Quarterly Update, Spring 2013

Village doctors attending our seminar
Village doctors attending our seminar

Dear China Cal donors,

We wanted to take this opportunity to update you, our donors and supporters on Global Giving, regarding some important developments at China Cal.

In addition to providing excellent care to children with congenital heart disease and coordinating their surgeries, China Cal also seeks to improve healthcare capacity in Yunnan by training village doctors. This week, China Cal will be in Dehong Prefecture, Lianghe County, Yunnan training village doctors. Chinese village doctors are farmers who study basic health care for between three and 24 months after high school. Their study does not focus heavily on chronic diseases like hypertension and diabetes, both of which are becoming more important health problems, especially in rural China. Drs. Cheng Loh and Donald Hastings of the Bless China International Organization, as well as Professor Renli Qiao of the University of Southern California will lead the training sessions, which will focus on the diagnosis and treatment of hypertension and diabetes. These sessions are being funded by the American College of Chest Physicians, and we plan to host similar training sessions around Yunnan later this year.

Child prodigy musician Marc Yu has teamed up with China Cal and will be joining us on our summer internship in June. Marc has been featured in the LA Times and has played for Ellen, Jay Leno, and Oprah. We invite you to read more about Marc here and on his website. Marc loves giving concerts, but he also enjoys hosting charity fundraisers, motivating people to donate to good causes like China Cal, and donating his time to give back to communities in need. Marc will be joining one of several intern teams that will travel by minivan down dirt roads to remote village schools where they will screen children for congenital heart disease. As an intern, Marc will listen carefully to children’s hearts in order to detect the rhythmic ‘swishes’ that doctors call heart murmurs. Aside from cardiologistsupervised heart screening, Marc and other interns help record medical histories, measure heart rate and blood pressure, and assist in physical and ultrasound examinations. Marc will also help advise parents regarding treatment programs, which include heart surgeries for their children which you have helped fund. Marc is as excited to join China Cal as we are to have him, and we look forward to fundraising collaborations in the future. If you would like to participate in an internship like Marc, please see our website for details and apply here.

Earlier this spring, Professor Robert Detrano, the founder of China Cal, had the opportunity to present at the Newborn Summit in Beijing, sponsored by the Newborn Foundation. This was a two-day series of lectures and discussions by international experts on congenital heart disease. Professor Detrano presented cases of children with Eisenmenger’s syndrome whom he treats in Yunnan province. Eisenmenger’s syndrome is the tragic result of failure to diagnose congenital heart disease in infants and small children. Eisenmenger patients are no longer operable and are destined to live short lives with decreased quality of life because of their disease. China Cal is dedicated to publicizing and eventually eliminating this tragedy. With your continued help, we can ensure that children in Yunnan undergo surgeries in a timely manner and do not develop this tragic syndrome.

Thank you for your continued interest in China Cal and for your commitment to the children of Yunnan. Please be in touch if you have any questions or would like to become more involved!
