This project will set up an information center and train 100 young adult to sensitize the community in the world’s 4th most polluted city, Kabwe, Zambia, on the dangers of lead poisoning.
Kabwe, home to 300,000 people, is Africa's most polluted city and is ranked as the world's fourth most polluted city. The 92 years (1902 - 1994) of unregulated mining activities in Kabwe have left human lives at risk of numerous diseases due to lead poisoning and a contaminated environment. Children and young adults who scavenge in the mines for left over bits of lead to sell for their livelihood usually end up with a damaged central nervous system, increased blood pressure and damaged kidneys.
OneWorld Africa will train 100 young adults to sensitize the community on the dangers of scavenging in the mines for left overs bits of lead. The Project will put up an information center that will continuously facilitate this knowledge shearing.
This project will enlighten over 50,000 people on the dangers of lead poisoning. Through training and outreach, we will reduce the community's exposure to poisonous lead and eventually save not only the human lives but also the environment in Kabwe.
