Up to 96,000 residents of the informal settlement of Mathare will gain access to a safe, clean, affordable water supply.
Mathare residents generally pay illegal vendors high prices for water of poor quality. KWENCH will replace the cartel of illegal vendors with legally registered community-based organizations (CBOs). The CBOs will establish legal connections with the Nairobi water utility. KWENCH will help them raise money for equipment and train the CBOs in financial management, operation and maintenance and hygeine. The CBOs will promise to maintain safe water supplies and operate legally and transparently.
Establishment of legal water connections and introduction of market competition will help CBOs buy and sell low-priced water. The purchase of high quality equipment and provision of training in operation and maintenance will increase water quality.
This project will create jobs for impovrished women and youth, provide safe and affordable water for thousands of people and replace an illegal water supply cartel with a legal and competitive water supply network.
