Many deaths every year caused by acute lower respiratory infections, the leading causes of disease and mortality which are the offspring of indoor pollution and lung congestion caused by the use of traditional stoves emitting smoke. A majority of villagers usually cook on the earthen stove or a three brick earthen burner which over a period of time is responsible for lung disease and blurred vision.

A hut enveloped in smoke and women trying to put up with burning eyes is a common sight in village homes. The eye-sight of hundreds of women is being affected besides causing respiratory problems to them due to inhaling of smoke. On the environmental front, there is a massive consumption of firewood and carbon emissions.

At another, it has made available effective smokeless stoves which reduce the drudgery that rural women face during their daily cooking. The smokeless stove initiative adopted a strategy that involved women in all aspects of dissemination.
