The Oriental Sweetgum Forest is only in Mugla, Turkey and in danger of becoming extinct; we aim to ensure forest sustainability by replanting corridors between dispersed segments increasing the total amount of the forest to 1000 hectares.
The Mugla Koyceiz Oriental Sweetgum Forest covered an area of 6000 hectares in the 1950s but today they survive only on an area of 750 hectares. The forest consists of remnants of a forest that has been left amid agricultural and residential areas. We are reuniting these parts via corridor method. We plant trees between the areas that have been severed from each other. As a result, a broader space is attributed as a forest without overtaking new land.
We are ensuring the ecological integrity of the forest by identifying suitable corridors between dispersed forest segments and replanting them, making the forest whole again. By planting 2000 saplings, 10,000 Sweetgum trees are protected.
The project will create corridors allowing 1000 hectares to survive.
