The goal of the project is to rebuild the self esteem of children who had been forced to join the Lord's Resistance Army and commit horrible crimes. Project will provide basic needs, psychosocial support and vocational training for self sustenance. Project will develop and deliver activities that facilitate behavior change, and reintegration into normal community life.
What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
An estimated 35,000 Ugandan Children were abducted by the Lord's Resistance Army and trained as soldiers to kill. Some children, ranging from ages 2-16, were held captive for long periods of time while others killed dozens of people including their own relatives. The children, have been very much abused and return home mentally traumatised and unable to live with other normal children. They display inappropriate behaviour to the extent that handling them requires specialists.
How will this project solve this problem?
Nascent will institute an reintegration program which will raise community awareness of the crimes, provide basic needs such as food, transitional shelter, health services, psychosocial, counseling, and training services to the child soldiers. Soldiers will be introduced to Behavior theraphy (art, drama, music, dance, horticulture, and manual art) in order to document and heal from their experiences. All these efforts will be aimed at promoting self esteem.
Potential Long Term Impact
By restoring mental and physical health, building self esteem, developing skills, and learning appropriate behavior, the child soldier will be able to reintegrated into a normal environment and gain a sense of identity and confidence .
