Summary

Zion Project runs an After-Care Home in Gulu,Uganda for little girls rescued from sexual exploitation/trafficking and a Women's Counseling Center & Employment Program, which offers counseling and jewelry making for women escaping forced prostitution

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

In northern Uganda, there are many women & girls who are forced into the sex-industry due to lack of food, jobs, & education. Many are teenagers displaced by a 20-year war where over 30,000 girls were used as child soldiers & sex slaves. Young girls do not attend school but are raped or enter prostitution to survive on the streets. Women sell themselves as their only option to feed their children & the numbers to continue to grow. We currently serve over 100 women & girls.

How will this project solve this problem?

Zion Project provides a loving home, food, counseling, education, medical support, tutoring & mentoring for young girls caught in child prostitution & sexual abuse. The Counseling Center offers support groups, parenting classes, ESOL, & employment in jewelry making for women who desire to leave the sex industry

Potential Long Term Impact

We believe empowering women is key to ending gender based violence, seeing healthy families, raising dignity, ending poverty, & reducing the spread of HIV. As their self-esteem rises, the risks of sexual exploitation and cycles of abuse are lower.
