Summary

This campaign will allow us to enroll 500 women in our two-week literacy and microfinance trainings, and to provide each of the 500 women with a zero-interest microloan of $100 USD. Owning a small business provides women affected by conflict a sustainable path to rise out of extreme global poverty, end child malnutrition, and to improve the overall quality of life for their families. We offer the training and support, they do the rest.

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

In a country where women are vulnerable to physical and sexual violence, there is little access to the means to play the dominant role as caretakers for their families. Lack of education and obstacles around business ownership make it near impossible for women to feed their children three meals per day. These disadvantages in society are also known as structural violence. This is what women in DRC are up against everyday.

How will this project solve this problem?

Investing in women measurably improves the lives of their families and their communities. Our loans create an opportunity. In our first year, we worked in 10 war-affected villages with 50 women. With only two rounds of loans, these women were able to rise out of extreme global poverty. Before, they made less than $1 per day in total. Now, all earn over $11 per day. These profits enabled women to take control of their lives and impact their communities.

Potential Long Term Impact

As women become self-sustaining entrepreneurs, we work with them to rebuild their communities according to their vision for development. Through Resolve community building projects, these women set up access to clean drinking water, created community health programs, developed sustainable irrigation practices, and built sanitary latrines. The women of Eastern Congo continue to prove that they can redefine power structures and rebuild their communities, making long term peace a possibility.

Project Message

"We need unity in the region. We must ensure we all sit at the same table and discuss to fix the problem peacefully. If we speak up, the world will join us in our struggle. Peace is possible."
