WACN is working to end exploitative labor of Children working in brick factories around the Kathmandu Valley. Migrant workers along with their children come to work in brick factories for six months out of a year.The children miss six months of school and end up dropping out. The children that are 10 years of age or older, work along with their parents in dangerous working conditions. WACN conducts literacy classes to make up for lost time in school so they can enroll back.
We are trying to end exploitative labor of Children working in brick factories around Kathmandu valley. Migrant workers along with their children come to work in brick factories for six months out of a year.The children that migrate along with the parents miss six months of school and end up dropping out. Children aged 7- 14 years work along with their parents in dangerous working conditions. We conduct literacy classes so that they can enroll back in school when they migrate back.
If the children do not enroll in the literacy programs right where they work, it is certain that they will drop out because they cannot make up for the lost work of 6 months in an academic year. We are hoping that staying in school will one day help them get out of exploitative labor. The idea is to encourage the children to stay in school so that they can have better jobs down the road.
We are at the initial stage of this literacy program. It is hard to convince the children to attend the literacy classes even though its right where they work because of the hard days labor. They are too tired to study. However, our goal is to make them understand that in order to get out of the exploitative labor condition it is important that they stay in school. Our goal is to reach as many as 1000 children in the first year. Thousands of children are a victim of exploitative labor.
