Challenge

Manual work in brick kilns of India is comparable to slave labor of feudal times. The initial advance taken by the workers, low wages, and the obligation to work till the end of the season makes the family bonded. The bondage and the attendant poverty are passed down the generations as the children who migrate with their parents miss out on education. The project seeks to mobilize and organize workers so that they can negotiate higher wages and end generations of debt bondage

Solution

Baseline mapping of target brick kilns, mobilization and empowerment of workers through constant interaction with trained animators and capacity building trainings, large public meetings and other events to demonstrate the collective power

Long-Term Impact

The project will liberate 3000 families from debt bondage. It will lead to an increase in wages in 50 brick kilns employing 7,500 workers. The children will be able to eat better and go to school
