Someone once said "Nobody can do everything, but, everybody can do something". Put together a lot of 'somethings' and you get amazing results for the horses! We rescue these magnificent animals that were unwanted, neglected, or abused. YOU can help care for them now. To ensure that they continue to thrive in their new home, we must improve the quality of the pastures they graze and make them sustainable for many years to come. Give a man a fish, as they say... We need to learn to fish!
What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
Many factors contribute to rising number of horses needing help by various rescue organizations. We, like many others, have had to take in more horses than the land can support while remaining a renewable resource. A high water table, an abundance of rain, and record numbers of horses have wreaked havoc on the pastures. Without immediate repair, the pastures will not be able to sustain their desire to graze. We will have to buy hay and grain instead of concentrating on rehabilitation and health
How will this project solve this problem?
The project will utilize landscape excavation principles to create a much needed drainage system to prevent water build up in the pastures. Steps will include land surveying, trench digging, pipe laying, rock and sand fill, topsoil fill, grass seeding, and watering. Standing water breeds insects and disease and kills pastures. Allowing a route for the water to feed the pastures and then drain away is absolutely essential to healthy, nutrient rich pastures rescue horses need for grazing.
Potential Long Term Impact
Horses deserve the absolute best we can give them! Installing a drainage system to improve the quality of their pastures ensures they will be able to graze the way they were meant to for as long as they need to stay. Rescued horses will come and go, but the land is here to stay and will provide sustainance to countless animals in the future through the successful completion of this pasture rejuvenation project.
