PROJECT TITLE: REHABILITATION OF THANE CYCLONE VICTIMS IN SOUTH INDIA (9753) 

REPORT TITLE: DISASTER RISK REDUCTION TRAINING PROGRAMME

Being  donations thro the Organization Global Giving our organization Chevaliar Roche Society in an united manner on 23.08.12 at Manakkuppam colony, Cuddalore district offered the training of Disaster Risk Reduction Management & Insurance Training programme. In the presence of Mrs. S. Sathya, president, panchayat level women Federation Mr. N.Senthil Nayagam, panchayat member, Manakkuppam presided over the training programme. This village is filled with Dalith people. This is a village heavily affected by cyclones, Nisha, Catherina and Tsunami like the disasters. Recently this village has been greatly affected with the cyclone Thane. The Team under the leadership of the project Manager Chevaliar Roche Society offered the useful Training programme effectively. During the training following information were taught to the community.

 

«                       Necessity of forming Disaster and Risk management team was taught.

«                       Types of disaster were explained

«                       Preparedness before the disaster was explained

«                       Safety measures were also taught.

«                       Evacuation routes to the safety places were taught

«                       It was taught how to act in a hurried manner as soon as the early warning is received from the Government.

«                       How to act during the time of disaster time- the search of rescue services.

«                       It was also clearly taught how the first Aid can be affected people in a practical manner.

«                       It was taught how to prevent the communicable diseases and live a healthy life after the disaster occurred.

«                       Rehearsal for disaster and Risk Reduction was done practically

«                       Mock – Drill programme also was convened to the local community.

finally Mrs. R. Jeyalakshmi, secretary, panchayat level women federation offered the vote of thanks

 

TRAINING ON INSURANCE

Time :  10.00 to 4. pm

Venue : Manakkuppam Panchayat

            Presence :  Mrs. S.Sathya, President, Panchayat Level Women Federation

 

The people of this village Manakkuppam are very poor and illiterated. They have no knowledge about the Insurance. No body taught these people about the Insurance. Therefore our team from the Chevaliar Roche Society explained the importance & Necessity of the Insurance.

«                       Life Insurance for Human was explained.

«                       We also emphasized the importance of premium payment individually.

«                       Insurance for cattle was explained

«                       Insurance for vehicles and fish crafts – importance was emphasized.

«                       Availability of all Govt. Insurance schemes were explained in detail.

 

People keenly hearing all these affairs during the Training programme.

PARTICIPATORY RURAL APPRAISAL (PRA)

 

Global Giving & Chevaliar Roche Society convened the participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) on 27.08.12 at Manakkuppam colony, Manakkuppam panchayat, Cuddalore District.

         In this programme public people farmers, women Self Help Group members, and representatives of people participated. People of this village are illlitereated and belong to the Dalith community. As this is the village already have been with the cyclones Nisha, Catherina Tsunami and finally by Thane it has been affected greatly with heavy damages. As it is a most vulnerable village, the team from the Chevaliar Roche Society with the leadership of the project manager went in to the village deeply and convened the participatory Rural Appraisal programme. During the PRA following points were discovered and informed to the local community.

«                 It was found out the location and distance of the village Manakkuppam colony from Cuddalore – Virudachalam main road.

«                 It was found out to the what extent this village has been affected with the Natural and Artificial disasters in the earlier days.

«                 Frequently affected locations by the disasters were traced. (vulnerable places)

«                 Vulnerable people being affected by the disasters were found out (such as women, physically handicapped, children , aged people, lepers and conceived ladies)

«                 Resource places of this village were traced out.

«                 Near by Govt. offices of this village their location and distance were found out (fire service, police station, Govt. Hospital etc.)

«                 Location of distance of the Govt. HQrs were traced (Collectrate, S.P.Office Govt. H.Q. Hospital etc.)

«                 Evacuation routes were found out.

«                 Short cuts to the safety places and Govt. offices were found out.

«                 Through the seasonal diagram prepared by the community we knew   the seasons of the winter, rain, summer and spring.

On the basis of the facts collected we advised the community to be careful about the disasters and offered the necessary explanation.
