PROJECT TITLE: REHABILITATION OF THANE CYCLONE VICTIMS IN SOUTH INDIA(9753)
REPORT TITLE : SURVEY , TOT, COUNSELING FOR THANE VICTIMS
REPORT PERIOD: 18.02.12 TO 08.03.12
SURVEY OF THE DAMAGED TILED HOUSES:
We know about, damage caused by cyclone Thane. Our state Govt. announced the grants for rebuilding of green houses (100% damaged houses) only. Because of this the tiled houses damaged by tree falling the tenants could not get the Govt. compensation. Others could (partial damaged) not get the provision, actually they are below the poverty line on 18.02.12 to 29.02.12) Those who are provided the compensation also need 5 years donation at least for the reconstruction of these houses. Therefore we started the survey for the tenants of partially damaged tiled houses. These survey was taken through our Global giving staff team. Through transact walk and PRA (Participatory Rural Appraisal) Our Global Giving team have submitted the PRA survey to the state Govt. through the Parangipettai Town panchayat president.
TOT (TRAINING OF TRAINERS FOR FIRST AID TRAINING:
Our targeted Parangipettai block were heavily affected by 2004 Tsunami, Nisha and also 2011 cyclone Thane. As the inhabitants like the above, they are affected more physically. Therefore we have selected 30 persons at the community from Parangipettai block and provided them training of Trainee (TOT). This TOT were trained by Global Giving project state level recognized Master trainer. (Our Global Giving aided project manager). These trainees were selected individually from various vulnerable hamlets on 23.02.12 to 25.02.12 (3 days). These TOT were disseminate the object of the training to the other inhabitants. They are called “Climate Volunteers” In this training programme, especially we concentrated on First aid. We taught them different types of first aid methods.
- Mainly we concentrated bandages with the supervision of Govt Nurse
- We trained the TOT trainees as follows
- Types of bandage clothes
a). Spiral bandage
b). Triangular bandage
c). Special bandage clothes (ex : different edges) and also major materials of bandages
- Gauze with open wove cotton
- Rubber ( for prevention of blood bleeding)
- Plaster of pairs
- Rules regulation of bandaging
- Extra fittings for bandages
- In our Disaster condition pure bandage clothes not available ,hence saint John cradle bandages was introduced Improvised slings only safety pins
- Ortro / sueletal damages
- Many ortho injury cases recorded present cyclone Thane
- Also we explained about forces erected direct force
- Indirect force
- Muscle shift
Types of bones :
Simple bones, compound bones, complicated bones, comminuted bones, Impacted bones, depressed bones, green stick, use of various slints.
During the time of disaster, the vulnerable community could not get the gauze / bandages clothes, plaster . That is why we suggested to use pure clothes what they have.
Group counseling was held at Parangipettai Town Panchayat office. A that the collect damaged tiles houses petitions. This petitions were collected and totally sent to state Govt. (through Town panchayat president). (on 05.03.12 to 08.03.12)
During Occasion we met 120 individual houses. fishermen / agricultural coolies. We provide them trauma counseling also. We use the tool of group counseling for our interventions.

The community was very heavily affected mentally. Because of the heavy damage occur over there, the children of the victims are still in great fear, they are afraid even with the tree branches shaken by wind. The community loose their sleep. We are provided the necessary counseling to the target individuals.
