PROJECT TITLE:REHABILITATION  OF  THANE CYCLONE VICTIMS IN SOUTH INDIA(9753)

REPORT TITLE : TO BE REDEEMED CUDDALORE, SOUTH INDIA

REPORT PERIOD:06.01.2012 TO 31.01.2012

SUB TITLE: DOCUMENTATION ON CYCLONE THANE , SOUTH INDIA

Dawn of the 30th Dec of the 2011 affected a generation heavily. This was not known to the people of Cuddalore. The cyclone “Thane” which passed shore between Cuddalore – Pondicherry tore the lives of the people in that area.

It had been accounted that

75, 523 Hec                 -           Paddy crops

8309 Hec                     -           Sugarcane

1253 Hec                     -           Coconut trees

87 Hec                         -           Cotton

2400 Hec                     -           Gram plants

5049 Hec                     -           Black gram and

150 Hec                       -           Palm oil trees were affected.

221 Kattamaran parked in the sea shore were vanished. 221 above 500 fibre boats were damged 2 lakhs and 40 thousand acre Paddy, 72 thousand 500 acre, Cashew nut treea and 20 thousand acreas of plantains were uprooted . About 2 thousand acres of Betal disintegrated by the stagnant water. In another way above 200 villages of 13 panchayat unions in Cuddalore district did not get any electricity for the past 25 days. There is no symptom for the same also. As the houses were not supplied of electricity how much possibility would be there for the lands? Even the EB workers from 10 districts including Chennai, Erode, Salem and Thanjavur camped over here, the work was not accomplished.

Farmers are unable to bear that the drops are drying here. With the hope of getting electricity soon, farmers are supplying water with the help of generator by paying Rs.600 /- per hours. The condition of agricultural women are here very pathetic because they collect water in their pots from the ponds and supply the same for their onion saplings. In above 20 villages including Nanamedu,  Uchimedu etc . Transformers had fallen down. Now 22k.watt Transformers have arrived at Chinna Kanganankuppam village.

Govt. announced compensation was not issued so far to the fishermen.  In Tamilnadu it was announced by the State Government that Rs.5 lakhs for the damaged steam boats, Rs. 3 lakhs for the partly damaged steam boats and Rs.75 thousand for damaged fibre boats and Rs.20 thousand for the partly damaged boats would be issued. This was not accepted by the 48 fisherman village people.

These village people ask the Government to grant for Crane boat , Vallam surai Net Rs.6,59,000 for STP steam Boat Rs.5,95,000 for IP Steam boats Rs.4 lakhs and eighteen thousand for FRP (IP) boats Rs.2,00,000 for FRP (Fibre) boats Rs.1,50,000 and for Katamaran Rs.35,000 as compensation . Because  of this they did not go to sea for catching fish.

On 29th January Mr. Kagandeep  Sing Bedi , Director , Cattles Dept & Fisheries Dept presided over an interaction and he announced that the necessary steps would be taken with the guidance of Ms.  Jayalalitha, Chief Minister. Hence the fishermen went for fishing on 20th January after a gap of 26 days.
