SUB TITLE: DOCUMENTATION ON CYCLONE THANE , SOUTH INDIA
Dawn of the 30th Dec of the 2011 affected a generation heavily. This was not known to the people of Cuddalore. The cyclone “Thane” which passed shore between Cuddalore – Pondicherry tore the lives of the people in that area.
It had been accounted that
75, 523 Hec - Paddy crops
8309 Hec - Sugarcane
1253 Hec - Coconut trees
87 Hec - Cotton
2400 Hec - Gram plants
5049 Hec - Black gram and
150 Hec - Palm oil trees were affected.
221 Kattamaran parked in the sea shore were vanished. 221 above 500 fibre boats were damged 2 lakhs and 40 thousand acre Paddy, 72 thousand 500 acre, Cashew nut treea and 20 thousand acreas of plantains were uprooted . About 2 thousand acres of Betal disintegrated by the stagnant water. In another way above 200 villages of 13 panchayat unions in Cuddalore district did not get any electricity for the past 25 days. There is no symptom for the same also. As the houses were not supplied of electricity how much possibility would be there for the lands? Even the EB workers from 10 districts including Chennai, Erode, Salem and Thanjavur camped over here, the work was not accomplished.
Farmers are unable to bear that the drops are drying here. With the hope of getting electricity soon, farmers are supplying water with the help of generator by paying Rs.600 /- per hours. The condition of agricultural women are here very pathetic because they collect water in their pots from the ponds and supply the same for their onion saplings. In above 20 villages including Nanamedu, Uchimedu etc . Transformers had fallen down. Now 22k.watt Transformers have arrived at Chinna Kanganankuppam village.
Govt. announced compensation was not issued so far to the fishermen. In Tamilnadu it was announced by the State Government that Rs.5 lakhs for the damaged steam boats, Rs. 3 lakhs for the partly damaged steam boats and Rs.75 thousand for damaged fibre boats and Rs.20 thousand for the partly damaged boats would be issued. This was not accepted by the 48 fisherman village people.
These village people ask the Government to grant for Crane boat , Vallam surai Net Rs.6,59,000 for STP steam Boat Rs.5,95,000 for IP Steam boats Rs.4 lakhs and eighteen thousand for FRP (IP) boats Rs.2,00,000 for FRP (Fibre) boats Rs.1,50,000 and for Katamaran Rs.35,000 as compensation . Because of this they did not go to sea for catching fish.
On 29th January Mr. Kagandeep Sing Bedi , Director , Cattles Dept & Fisheries Dept presided over an interaction and he announced that the necessary steps would be taken with the guidance of Ms. Jayalalitha, Chief Minister. Hence the fishermen went for fishing on 20th January after a gap of 26 days.
Cuddalore district is one of the 13 coastal districts of Tamilnadu State. Cuddalore district consist of 7 Taluks headquarters as follows: 1) cuddalore, 2) Panrutti 3) Chidambaram 4) Kurunjipadi 5) Virudhachalam 6) Kattumannar Koil 7) Thittakkudi and is having 13 blocks. Population of the Cuddalore district.

The Cuddalore district of total population 2,600,880 was hit by Thane cyclone on 30th December 2011 began at 7.00p.m with the high speed and gradually increased up to 130 km. during 7.00 am. Of the 31st December. This cyclone Thane made a heavy damage to the people of Cuddalore district and it entirely affected the livelihood of the people over there. To evaluate this from the Chevaliar Roche Society, Thoothukudi a team of 6 members named Mr. A. Damotharan, Mr. K. Ravichandran , Mr. V. Ramachandran, Mrs.R. Stella , Mrs. B. Sudha , and Mrs. J. Mary went there and made the survey from Jan 9-13 and 18 – 21 Jan 2012 . There are met the personal Assistant of the District Collector Mr. Shanmuganathan over there. According to this Guidance, we visited the Blocks of Cuddalore, Kurunjipadi, Panrutti, Anna Kiramam which were severely affected areas by Thane hit. Moderately affected areas are Parangippettai, Mel Bhuvanakiri, Kumaratchi and Keerapalayam. Also we visited the following five blocks:
During our visit to these places the concerned BDOs guided us to visit many places. We collected the following Particulars in district level:
i) Huts
ii) Tiled Houses
i). Transformers
ii). Electric posts
iii). Electric Towers
We have listed the damages of cyclone Thane hit in district level. Town panchayats and Municipalities including again this team went to Cuddalore district and collected the block wise data and to perform PRA from Jan 9-13 and 18 – 21 Jan 2012 Atfirst we net Mr. Selvaperumal , APO of DRDA , Mrs. Kalaivani , Assistant Director , Village Panchayat , Mr. Padmanabhan, BDO , Mr. Satheish Kumar, DY BDO etc.Both of them provided us same contact phone numbers and informed same officials to help us in Data collection and to perform PRA. When we performed the block wise PRA we collected the following particulars. According to our PRA survey it has been heavily affected as it is a coastal and agricultural area. Hence we chose 7 panchayats from Cuddalore bock and from Parangipettai block 2 panchayats. We performed PRA collected the damages occurred by cyclone Thane hit.
INFERENCE :
According to our survey results revealed that
a). The Cuddalore district community only came out of this situation at least after 10 years
b) Totally houses are damaged
c) 90 % of the Huts are damaged
d) Total Cattle and Poultry destroyed
e) The livelihood condition are greatly affected
f) Road , Power Water and Sanitation till now at problem (after one month)
g). Total environmental (in the sense of trees and agricultural) situation are worst
