Mission

To mobilize community education initiatives that benefit people and the environment. New Latitude is spearheading inspiring grassroots programs and resilient self-sustaining conservation and development projects in Southwest Madagascar by: • engaging rural communities in creative vocational education and employment •generating self-sustaining income from 'natural capital' • creating opportunities that ensure the protection of the worlds most unique forests

Programs

Community outreach and environmental education to increase the production of food and useful native tree species i.e. permaculture gardening. Growing plants reduces malnutrition and deforestation, generates income, and improves living standards for rural Malagasy communities. Original research and conservation of the worlds most unique plant and animal species.

Personnel Overview

Dr. Martina Petru - Project Coordinator
Martina holds a PhD in plant ecology and has led a multitude of research projects and expeditions in the Middle East, North America and Madagascar. With a fundamental drive for developing innovative, resilient and creative learning environments, she naturally builds extensive collaboration with everyone from rural villagers to international academic, conservation and development NGOs.

Anne Philips - Graphic Designer and Public Relations Consultant
Anne Phillips is an illustrator and art enthusiast interested in the union of visual art, healthy lifestyles, social action, and the environment. Anne has been employed as a medical illustrator for the past three years at UMHS. Anne helped design NL's logo and funding package and acts as our PR coordinator in the Ann Arbor/Philadelphia area(s).

Claude Manarina - Malagasy Field Coordinator
Claude is the first Malagasy student to collaborate with New Latitude and complete his masters degree (with honors) as part of the program. Claude is an adept community organizer with a great passion for education and protecting nature by improving the standard of living for local Malagasy communities. Claude is an invaluable team member who's insights are innovative and cheerful.
