Summary

Help increase income opportunities for hardworking Haitians by investing in local economies. Launch a community credit fund, support locally owned and managed grain mills and jump start a goat breeding enterprise. Projects like these can help whole communities move toward self-sufficiency and improved livelihoods.

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

Rural Haitians are farmers and small merchants who are self-employed. Most rural Haitian communities lack opportunities for jobs and income generating activities. This makes it hard to climb out of poverty and get ahead.

How will this project solve this problem?

Building community-led businesses like grain and sugar cane mills are essential in strengthening communities' economies. These local enterprises play a critical role in creating sources of income for hardworking Haitians. Beyond providing farmers with a place to affordably have their grains milled, these cooperatives are creating centers of commerce. Community credit funds are creating access to low-interest credit and goat breeding projects are creating steady streams of income.

Potential Long Term Impact

Building locally-led enterprises in Haiti will not only strengthen local economies, but will also create numerous opportunities for income generation. This is an exciting prospect as impoverished Haitians are provided with the tools and resources to become stewards of their own future and increase self-sufficiency.
