Summary

Deaf children in Argentina will be able to enjoy children stories in their natural language: Argentine Sign Language. Our aim is to promote literature from childhood within the deaf community. Most of these children are currently illiterate.

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

Access to books in the deaf community is almost nonexistent due to the linguistic barriers and therefore more than 80% of deaf adults in Argentina is functionally illiterate. 90% of deaf children have hearing families. This situation creates communicative barriers between parents and children that leave deaf children without the opportunity to enjoy children stories.

How will this project solve this problem?

The first step is deaf readers' training. These deaf readers will be in charge of reading and storytelling workshops in Argentinean sign language in deaf schools. Secondly, we will publish educational material for deaf children's teachers and videobooks in Argentinean Sign Language. Videobooks in LSA (www.videolibros.org.ar) is an example of the ways we plan to change the critical situation of deaf people in our country. Reading makes you free! Until now we have published 15 videobooks.

Potential Long Term Impact

The long term impact is twofold. On the first place, deaf children throughout Argentina will have a natural and spontaneous relationship with books and will be able to access the world of literature and imagination. And, on the second place, there will flourish several social and linguistic spaces that enhance the relation between written books and the deaf community in general.
