Summary

With $3,500 left to raise, this project will build a rapid HIV testing laboratory at the Center for Promotion and Comprehensive Care of Adolescents (CEPAIPA) located in La Libertad, Ecuador. CEPAIPA is a small community health center located in a high school that provides on reproductive health education and social support for school-aged teens & young adults. Donations will fund basic lab supplies, larger equipment & antiparasitic products.

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

Of 2,100 adolescents and young students in CEPAIPA, 75% do not have access basic diagnostic laboratory testing, as result of economic constraints. This leaves many without the possibility of risk assessment or early detection of anemia, parasitosis, urinary pathology, impaired growth and development, or other conditions that are not detected in physical examination. 2100 students and their families, 110 teachers, 15 administrators, and 8 service workers will benefit from the laboratory.

How will this project solve this problem?

This project will build a basic laboratory clinic in CEPAIPA, where the community members can get affordable basic diagnostic tests close to home. In addition to limited access of these basic health tests, students also cannot afford transport to treatment centers for specialized follow-up care. Thus, part of the funding will pay for transportation costs to such treatment centers, so the students can get a confirmation of diagnosis and necessary treatment.

Potential Long Term Impact

The construction of this laboratory will give affordable basic laboratory testing to students and community members on the Santa Elena province where La Libertad is located. With access to such a clinic, students will have earlier knowledge of their health status and take the necessary measures to improve their health and protect others. In addition, with CEPAIPA's model of sustainability and student empowerment, students will be trained to manage administrative and technical aspects of the lab.
