Challenge

Girls affected by poverty, get trafficked from blocks adjacent to Sundarban area to several brothels of India. State fails to protect or rehabilitate them. Survivors of sex trafficking, upon returning to their homes, suffer from alienation & stigma, become vulnerable to trappings by men. Panchayets neglects to victim's needs for rehabilitation, police fails to protect victims from intimidation by traffickers and compel them to settle out of court. Lack of livelihoods often pushes them to brothel

Solution

The project will (a) offer direct services to 50survivors, using restorative practices, to help them cope with and challenge stigma, develop case management services, mobilize support from stakeholders and communities (b) offer services to survivors, set up and run micro-businesses (c) lobby with relevant state ministry to adopt the model of micro businesses with survivors as a rehabilitation scheme (d) document human right violations of survivors through research and campaign against the same.

Long-Term Impact

Long term impacts of this project are: (1) Micro enterprises by 50survivors of sex trafficking will be formed, through which poverty among the survivors will be alleviated, re-trafficking will be prevented (2) Will break the survivors' alienation and victimhood, and strengthen their resilience and support them in their fight against traffickers (3) Knowledge and capacity of the workers will be built (4) In long run the state will be forced to think about the survivors' economic rehabilitation.
