The Armenian Environmental Network (AEN) will produce and disseminate Public Service Announcements (PSAs) and social advertisements that will introduce sustainable waste management practices, educating Armenians about ways to reduce their "eco-footprint" by reducing, reusing and recycling. The PSAs and social advertisements will call on people to participate in trash cleanups and will distribute reusable bags, empowering Armenians to become the solution to the waste problem.
What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
Armenians are generally unaware of the environmental health hazards associated with poor waste management. Currently, no program exists to separate waste for environmentally appropriate disposal. Many people dump their waste along nearby rivers, streams, gorges and roadsides, or burn the waste, releasing toxic fumes into the air, creating serious acute and chronic threats to public health that disproportionately impact socioeconomically disadvantaged youth and elderly.
How will this project solve this problem?
This project will increase public understanding of the hazards of poor waste management and of alternative methods to protect environmental health. AEN will achieve this through organizing community trash cleanups and distributing reusable shopping bags throughout the country.
Potential Long Term Impact
The project will reach thousands of Armenians through a series of three PSAs shown on television for one month and the internet indefinitely. A series of three social advertisement posters will be placed on 15 buses throughout Yerevan for one month. In addition, trash clean ups will be organized and 1100 reusable bags will be distributed in all the regions of Armenia. These actions will promote an environmentally conscious society and public responsibility to maintain a clean community.
