Challenge

Because of the poverty created by a civil war that spanned 20 years, a generation of adults is unable to read or write. Women are affected worst. The Ministry of Education has initiated a national literacy and adult education radio campaign, but its success depends on access. Most of Mozambique's 18 million inhabitants live in extreme poverty in rural communities without electricity. In these areas, few people own radios and those that do are unable to afford batteries.

Solution

The Ministry of Education has requested thousands of solar powered wind-up Lifeline radios to distribute to women's listening groups to ensure that the literacy campaign reaches those most in need.

Long-Term Impact

Many thousands of women will be trained in reading and writing skills to lift them and their children from poverty and contribute to economic recovery. They also will receive information to help combat the spread of HIV/AIDS and other diseases.
