University of Wisconsin students of EDGE Project will make available a household water treatment system, developed in partnership with InnoCentive for a partner community in Uganda. The filters will provide safe water for drinking, cooking, and washing for a family. Hundreds will no longer be drinking turbid water that lies off the shores of Lake Victoria, preventing illness and incapacitation. The materials for one filter are about $15 to $20. What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
The water around Lingira Island is laden with bacteria, viruses, and other organisms that cause gastro-intestinal diseases. The abject poverty of the area means that nearly all 3,000 residents of the island must use this water that is fed by runoff from industry and human and animal waste. Incidents of illness resulting from drinking, cooking with, or washing with this water are frequent, debilitating, and occasionally lethal. Access to safe water is a human right and we are taking action.
How will this project solve this problem?
We are partnered with engineer Chris Schulz who designed a household water treatment system specifically for developmental contexts. Besides being simple, cheap, and easy to operate, it improves upon other ceramic filter systems by providing more water at a faster rate. By providing filters at 1/4 their cost, we aim to make clean water affordable, but not free. This ensures that our supporters' gifts will help families who are up to the task of properly maintaining the filters.
Potential Long Term Impact
Illnesses that are common and treatable can often hurt families' income and health in impoverished areas. By, working to eliminate this link of disease transmission, Lingirans will spend less time at home with illness and more time providing for their families or working on their studies.
