Thanks for your support. We have a new project!

Escuela Nueva Students with Learning Guides

Dear friends,

Since last June 2013, we have been working to provide 198,000 students in rural Colombia with our Learning Guides. Through an agreement with the Secretary of Education of the Department of Antioquia, we received the funding for such an ambitious project. We are very happy to have achieved such a great accomplishment that's currently triggering for more municipalities to demand these quality education materials. However, we want to announce that we will close this project on GlobalGiving to open a new one.

Looking for new ways to have a positive impact on society, we have decided to improve the quality of education of a small 70 student rural school in a town called Zipacon. These students need Learning Guides, but their teachers also need training. Their school also lacks major support materials for learning process.

If you would like to continue supporting our work promoting better education and, therefore better life opportunities for children in Colombia, please donate to this new project on this link:

We delivered Learning Guides for 198,000 kids

Students receive new Learning Guides
Students receive new Learning Guides

198,000 children in 4,000 rural schools in Antioquia, Colombia, have received our Learning Guides in January 2013.

The Antioquia Education Office has supplied rural municipalities with Fundacion Escuela Nueva’s Learning Guides. This means that approximately 198,000 children in 4,000 schools will be using our guides in this Colombian region. It is a pleasure for us to announce that, after an evaluation process with teachers, the Antioquia Office of Education decided that the materials produced by FEN are the best option for the population.

The guides allow for self-paced learning and encourage a spirit of investigation and autonomy in the classroom. They promote learning to learn, learning to do, learning to communicate, and, most importantly, learning to coexist and work together. They have a comprehensive coverage of core subject areas (language, mathematics, natural sciences, and social sciences). In addition, the guides also cover areas such as technology along with ethics and values. Furthermore, these guides are supported by a set of virtual resources also designed by our team. It is our hope that our Learning Guides offer teachers and students in Antioquia the opportunity to improve results in education while unlocking 21st century skills.

2 Major Achievements in our Project!

Escuela Nueva Students with Learning Guides
Escuela Nueva Students with Learning Guides

Dear friends,

Fundacion Escuela Nueva (FEN) is glad to announce two major achievements in our project to improve the Quality of Education for 198,000 Children in Antioquia, Colombia.

1. We have signed an agreement with the Escuela Nueva Teacher Network in Antioquia! Through this agreement, we will be able to work with 40 EN teachers, who are defined as multipliers due to their role in spreading and supporting other teachers in the region working with the EN model.

2. Last week, we ordered Learning Guides (FEN's textbooks adapted to our education model) for 198,000 children in 4,000 rural schools. These materials will be sent to the schools by the end of January 2013!

FEN wants to ask again for your support: please, donate and spread the word

By donating, you will help us address the specific needs of these children. With adequate resource, we will provide students with language and math workbooks to practice reading comprehension and problem solving skills. Only 2 out of 10 students in Colombia understand what they read, and only 1 out of 10 students is able to solve math problems. Your contribution will make a big difference for the youth of Colombia!

Best wishes,

Fundación Escuela Nueva

With your donations, we trained 31 teachers! Thanks!

31 teachers attended the first induction workshop for the Escuela Nueva model, in Cartagena de Chaira, (Southern Colombia) August, 13th - 17th. More than 400 students will benefit directly through a better performance on the part of their teachers.

This workshop was supported by local authorities and representatives of the Colombia Responde national strategy. Colombia Responde aims to establish a sustainable state of peace and security. Cartagena de Chaira was strongly affected by drug trafficking in the 1980s and it is now transitioning to new social opportunities.

The attendees to this first workshop experienced our educative model and learnt from its general principles, components, strategies, methodology and its appropriate implementation to achieve a qualitative improvement of rural education:

  • Active, participatory, and cooperative learning that is focused on the student.
  • A curriculum that has relevance to the daily lives of the students.
  • A calendar and a system that allow for flexibility with evaluations and promotions.
  • A stronger and closer relationship between the school and the community.
  • An emphasis on promoting democratic values and encouraging civic participation.
  • Transitioning teachers into the role of classroom facilitators.

FEN wants to thank you for your donation. Part of this training was funded with your support. A higher quality education will offer new opportunities to young generations in Cartagena del Chaira. To complete the implementation of the Escuela Nueva model, these teachers need to receive two more training sessions. We also need your support to provide students with our Learning Guides. Please help us spreading the word! Share this project with your friends and family and become an Escuela Nueva Ambassador!
