Summary

The Debt bondage in Pakistan brick kilns industry especially of female workers leads to exploitation of sexual abuse and abuse of women. VSWO as a human rights activist, is helping the victims through rights advocacy and access to justice. The freedom of under debt women could not be secured without paying back the debts, an average of $1000 loans per women is outstanding.VSWO had establish a Freedom Fund to collect donations from every where to purchase freedom. So far freedom of 4 purchased.

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

The issue of debt bondage in Brick Kilns and agriculture sector is the critical in Pakistan and the ILO reports depicted the situation even more grave. There are about 1000 families engaged in the brick making and baking work. In a recent study conducted by this organization explored that that more than 100 women led families are under severe debt burden and vulnerable to the sexual abuse of the kilns managers/owners. An average of 5 to 6 rights abuses case came to limelight in every month.

How will this project solve this problem?

VSWO has establish two Funds (Brick Kilns workers welfare fund and Freedom Fund) to call for donations from the philanthropy from within the country and at international level, the first one is to improve the living conditions of the poverty stricken labor community of Brick Kilns industry and the second fund is to purchase freedom of the victims of debt bondage by paying back their debts. The response of local philanthropy is very encouraging while call is being floated through this call.

Potential Long Term Impact

Through this funding we will extend our efforts to enroll 200 more child labors in the school, already established for this purpose, provide free medical treatment with medicines to 100 more labor families and provide financial support to 100 female debt bondage to purchase freedom to live in a secure and dignified life.We have already started a free school for child labors of under-debt families with enrollment of 50 students and successfully purchased freedom of 4 most deserving women.
