This project will support new associations of HIV+ youth in 5 communities in Cameroon and provide HIV services to HIV-affected youth in their communities.
Over 500,000 people in Cameroon are HIV-positive. According to the most recent Demographic and Health Survey, only one-third of Cameroonian youth know how to prevent HIV transmission, and only 11% had received an HIV test in the last year. Affording and accessing HIV services is very difficult for poor, rural youth; stigma in their communities is high. This project will provide community-based HIV services to over 1,000 youth in five rural communities in northern Cameroon.
EFA will give youth skills in HIV prevention, organization-building, and microfinance, as well as providing them with resources to promote HIV services, education, testing, referrals and home-based care to HIV-affected youth in their communities.
HIV+ youth will access testing, treatment, and care. Communities will be better educated to prevent HIV. Stigma against HIV+ people will decrease. HIV+ youth will be leaders in their communities and live healthier, more productive lives.
Before, people in my community treated me like I was already dead. Now it's me that educates them. They ask what happened during the trainings because I transformed from being dead to being a doctor.
