Survivors start drinking water within hours after a disaster. The threat of disease from lack of clean drinking water has been horribly apparent following rapid-onset natural disasters. It is almost a certainty that overcrowding in affected areas combined with little clean water and poor sanitation will result in outbreak of disease. International Medical Corps has teamed up with DayOne Response to pilot a water purification program that could change the way the world responds to disasters.
What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
Large-scale disasters often disrupt drinkable water supply, especially in the world's poorest and conflict-ridden areas. Without access to clean water, vulnerable populations are much more likely to suffer from deadly diseases such as cholera. Procter & Gamble (P&G) provides one robust and effective point-of-use treatment through the P&G Purifier of Water treatment packet. Though highly successful, P&G's packets require tools not consistently available after a disaster.
How will this project solve this problem?
International Medical Corps will pilot at least 500 Waterbags in flood-prone areas such as Sudan, South Sudan, and Kenya. It will work with communities to stock Waterbags in households and community centers (e.g., health clinics); promote water and hygiene education through training with the Waterbag; evaluate the training; and obtain community feedback. International Medical Corps will evaluate different training techniques to determine the best method for future use.
Potential Long Term Impact
The Waterbag has the potential to be transformational in the face of disasters for vulnerable communities. In a catastrophe of the magnitude of Haiti's earthquake, the Waterbag can provide clean, drinkable water for individuals and communities directly affected by the disaster; in addition, local and national governments and first responders such as NGOs can preposition the Waterbag in preparation for a disaster, providing valuable support for themselves and the community.
