This project plans to improve health standards of school children in poor rural areas in Kakamega County through protecting 20 springs, building 100 sanitation facilities, and though hygiene training.
About 60% of schools in western province lack safe water for use since the only available sources is situated 400 meters to about 6 kilometers away. Besides there is inadequate access to sanitation facilities, poor hygiene practice in schools. The project seeks to intervene and provide them with safe drinking water, sanitation facilities and hygiene education to help and improve their health standards and face their opportunities offered in life confidently.
Distribute sanitary towels to poor girls in schools, Construction of water storage tanks and latrines in Primary Schools. We will also construct latrines to poor household in the village, train and educate the beneficiaries on sanitation and hygiene. We will also train rural based artisans on construction skills for future maintenance of the facilities.
The project will benefit 4,000 pupils and teachers in 10 schools and 900 people in rural poor villages, by improving access to water, sanitation and hygiene facilities and education that will lead to the reduction of water and hygiene related diseases and thereby improve their health and living standards.
